England are taking on Denmark tonight as Gareth Southgate’s side look to continue their winning start to the Nations League campaign.

Raheem Sterling’s late penalty was just enough to see off Iceland in their opening game in Rekjavik, while Denmark lost to group favourites Belgium in their first match. England will of course be without Saturday’s debutants Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood after the pair were sent home for breaking quarantine protocols.

DENMARK 0-0 ENGLAND – 12’

Christensen aims a big diagonal at Poulsen, but the ball floats over his head and out. Delaney then beats Rice, who fouls him, but Skov smashes the free-kick over from 25 yards.

DENMARK 0-0 ENGLAND – 8’

Schmeichel almost lets the ball roll under his foot and out for a corner. That’s about as close as England have got to an attacking move in this opening 10 minutes.

DENMARK 0-0 ENGLAND – 5′

England not really getting too many passes in midfield at the moment. It’s a changed shape today, a 3-4-3, and so far the middle of the park looks a little haphazard. One of the debutants in there too, remember.

DENMARK 0-0 ENGLAND – 2′

Denmark pushing high up and putting the England defence under pressure early on.

57 as a player, 43 as manager – 100 games for Southgate with England tonight.

ANTHEMS

The players are out and we’re moments from kick-off. The sides are lined up for their national anthems in the entirely empty stadium.

ALMOST TIME…

Gareth Southgate on his selection:

“I was fortunate to hand two players their first England shirt today and we spoke about what the badge mean and how you leave the shirt in a better way that you got it. I am pleased for Conor Coady and Kalvin Phillips who have had a longer wait than others and it may mean more to them.

“I did not need to build the game up in their minds but it was about giving them the belief they can go out there like they do for their clubs.”

TRENT AWARD

He’s starting for England tonight, but it has just been announced that Trent Alexander-Arnold has won the PFA Young Player of the Year for 19/20.

Congratulations to him – that’ll sit nicely alongside his Premier League winner’s medal, his Champions League trophy from the year before and the other trophies he’s collected around the world over the past 12 months.

JUST UNDER 30 MINS TO KO

It’s fair to note that this game has been rather overshadowed once again, by those who aren’t even here.

Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden were both sent home from the squad, days after winning their first caps, while Harry Maguire was also removed from the initial squad.

Chances for others, then.

Two debutants in the England lineup, with Coady in defence and Phillips in midfield. A further three uncapped players await on the bench for their chance, in Dean Henderson, Jack Grealish and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
